The truth about hog-baying events

Uncle Earl's Hog Dog Trials (Winnfield, Louisiana)

On Monday, The Advocate newspaper published a front-page article about Uncle Earl’s Hog Dog Trials in Winnfield, Louisiana. The article featured these two disturbing photos by staff photographer Javier Gallego.

It is illegal in Louisiana to host an event in which dogs are encouraged to attack pigs inside an arena, but state law (§102.19. Hog and canine fighting prohibited) specifically exempts the Uncle Earl’s event. Pigs are horribly mutilated and it’s perfectly legal.

Please contact Governor Jeff Landry and demand that his loophole be closed.

It is clear from The Advocate’s photos that baying events cause animals tremendous suffering, and should be illegal for the same reasons that dog-fighting is a felony offense. Abusing animals for entertainment is inconsistent with Louisiana’s values.
